OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY

Ol Pejeta had its beginnings in the early 1940’s, as a ranch owned by Lord Delamere, one of the first and most influential British settlers in Kenya. In 1988, Lonrho Africa, one of Ol Pejeta’s previous owners, established the Sweetwaters Game Reserve in response to concern over declining elephant and rhino numbers due to poaching and illegal hunting. Established as a sanctuary for black rhino and other wildlife, the Game Reserve expanded over time to 90,000 acres – what is now known as Ol Pejeta. Today, Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, and home to two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos. It is also the only place to see chimpanzees in Kenya, in a 300-acre sanctuary established to rehabilitate animals rescued from the black market. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy seeks to protect biodiversity, promote healthy ecosystems and support sustainable development through innovative nature-based solutions. Ol Pejeta also seeks to support the people living around its borders, to ensure wildlife conservation translates to better education, healthcare and infrastructure for the next generation of wildlife guardians. From a working cattle ranch in colonial Kenya to a trailblazer of conservation innovation – the story of Ol Pejeta is as enchanting as it is inspirational.

MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK

Standing at an impressive 5,199 m, Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa and the sacred throne of Ngai, the god of the Kikuyu tribe, who live on the southern and western sides of the mountain. An ancient extinct volcano with summits clad in rugged glaciers, expansive lakes, mineral springs and forested slopes, Mount Kenya is one of the most impressive and memorable landscapes in East Africa. In 1949, the Mount Kenya National Park was established to protect the wildlife, the surrounding environment such as the unique afro-alpine ecosystem of the mountain, and Mount Kenya as a whole — a crucial drainage basin in Kenya’s natural water system. In 1997, the park and the surrounding forest reserve both became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit Mount Kenya’s scenic and biodiverse slopes and forests and enjoy an abundance of wildlife on a game drive — from larger animals like elephants and Cape buffaloes to smaller mammals such as antelope, the Mount Kenya hyrax, and colobus monkeys. For the bird enthusiast, the park is also home to over 130 bird species, from starlings to vultures.
